Groundwater System Installation

Port of Texas City, Texas City, Texas

Columbia was contracted to install a product recovery trench on the hurricane levee between refineries located in Texas City , Texas . The trench was to be a total of 23-feet deep and 180-feet long. Unique requirements the project included that benzene contaminated soils that were excavated during the installation of the trench would be considered a hazardous waste if the soil were removed from the trench.

Columbia excavated a sloped trench to create a working area at 9-feet below grade. The excavated soils were placed within the sloped trench to avoid becoming a waste material. With the trench only 13-feet deep, Columbia excavated the trench, placed vertical recovery piping, and backfilled with pea gravel.

The trench construction took only 2 days avoiding any need for slurries and additional waste materials. Recovery system piping was tied into 3 additional wells utilizing directional boring under the levee roadway. The project was completed under budget and ahead of schedule.
